ACT Exam
The ACT is one of the most widely used standardized tests in the United States. Taken by high school-level students prior to college admissions, the ACT is used to project a student’s readiness for college. The exam takes roughly four hours to complete and consists of four sections: English, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning. Students have the choice to take a writing test at the end. The exam is scored on a scale of 1-36 before the sections are averaged to get an overall composite score. At HYE Tutors, we understand what this exam means for students and what is at stake and that the key to a successful exam day is thorough preparation. Our team of experienced tutors has broken down the exam into manageable sections and works closely with students to cover both basic and complex concepts. Our past success stories are testaments to the hands-on approach that makes us Los Angeles’ best ACT prep service.
The English portion of the ACT consists of 75 questions over 5 passages and covers areas like sentence structure, usage/mechanics, and rhetorical skills. Our approach to studying for this section goes beyond just knowing where to include commas or apostrophes, delving deeply into teaching concepts of sentence structure and written fluency. This requires training your eye to successfully identify errors within written passages.
The Mathematics portion is 60 questions and covers a variety of areas such as pre-algebra, algebra, plane geometry, trigonometry, and more. Our trained math tutors target the areas of mathematics that a student struggles with the most, and help them sharpen their skills prior to exam day. Because of this section’s broad range of concepts, we make sure to cover the basics of each mathematical study, as well as related complex concepts.
The ACT’s Reading section is a 40-question exam consisting of four sections. They each require students to use their reading comprehension skills to accurately analyze the text. The provided passages are representative of the level of material students can expect to encounter during their first year of college. Our team knows that success in the Reading section requires mastering structure, spotting key ideas, and knowing how to integrate ideas and concepts into text. The answers to the questions are solely based on the content either stated or implied in the passages, therefore the solutions lie in the fine print. Finding those answers requires a trained eye that HYE Tutors can help you acquire.
The science portion of the exam is 40 questions and contains seven passages regarding research summary, data representation, and conflicting viewpoints. We conduct various exercises with our students to help them analyze scientific information and its graphical representation.
Lastly, the optional writing section is completed within 40 minutes and consists of an essay based on a given prompt. Prompts cover broad social issues and require students to provide their opinions in relation to given arguments. While the essay does not affect a student’s composite score, some universities require students to take this section if submitting an ACT score.
